Impact Stories

Every person has a story.

Some are stories of overcoming challenges, others of discovering new opportunities, finding stability, or taking the next step toward a brighter future. While each journey is different, they all remind us of one powerful truth: the right support at the right time can change a life.

At United Way Emerald Coast, our impact is about more than numbers. It's about the hardworking families and individuals across Okaloosa and Walton counties who are finding opportunities to thrive with support from our donors and local non-profit partners.

Behind every impact number is a real person with a story worth sharing. Meet some of our neighbors, learn about their journeys, and discover how community support is helping them overcome challenges, reach new milestones, and build brighter futures.

A Helping Hand When It Matters Most

For nearly 18 years, two hardworking parents dedicated themselves to the same company, building a stable life for their family and providing for their two young children. But when both parents unexpectedly lost their jobs, the financial security they had worked so hard to maintain was suddenly at risk.

Like many ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families, they found themselves facing an unexpected setback that made meeting everyday needs increasingly difficult. With two children depending on them, even putting food on the table became a growing concern.

Accustomed to providing for themselves, asking for help wasn't easy. But through Caring Coach, a Catholic Charities of Northwest Florida program funded by United Way Emerald Coast, the family found the compassion and support they needed during a difficult time.

The food assistance provided much more than meals. It helped ease the family's immediate financial burden, allowing the parents to focus on finding employment and rebuilding their stability without the constant worry of how they would feed their children.

Just as importantly, the kindness they experienced reminded them that they weren't alone.

For this family, a helping hand during an uncertain time became a source of hope and reassurance.

a Fresh Start for Mr. L

After serving his country, military veteran Mr. L found himself facing one of life's most difficult challenges: homelessness. As he worked to rebuild his life and transition into stable housing, he needed more than just a roof over his head. He needed access to basic necessities, a sense of security, and a community he could count on.

With encouragement from his VA social worker, Mr. L connected with Elder Services' Meals on Wheels program, funded by United Way Emerald Coast and CHELCO. What began as a way to access nutritious meals soon became an important source of friendship, stability, and encouragement.

Through the program, Mr. L developed meaningful relationships with staff and volunteers who offered more than a meal at his doorstep. Their kindness and consistent presence helped him feel connected to his community as he navigated this new chapter.

Today, Mr. L has a place to call home and is continuing to work toward greater independence and self-sufficiency. With newfound stability and a growing support system, he is also taking steps toward reconnecting with his family.

His story is a reminder that sometimes, a fresh start begins with something as simple as a warm meal and a helping hand.

Inspiring Tomorrow's Innovators

Waylon has been loving the hands-on activities and experiments at a United Way Emerald Coast-funded program. From coding to robotics, every lesson has sparked his curiosity and encouraged him to explore new possibilities.

When asked which activity was his favorite, Waylon's answer said it all: "I can't pick! I like all of them!" Robotics has become a particular passion, and the experience has inspired him to dream even bigger. When asked if the program increased his interest in STEAM, he didn't hesitate. "Yes, it has! I want to go to a STEM middle school now!"

Like many children in ALICE families, Waylon is full of potential. Opportunities like these help ensure barriers don't stand in the way of learning, exploration, and discovery. Today, Waylon is building confidence, discovering a passion for STEAM, and imagining a future filled with possibility.

More Than a Meal

Meet Mr. Young.

Like many older adults in our community, Mr. Young benefits from a United Way Emerald Coast-funded program that provides nutritious meals and friendly visits to neighbors ages 55 and older.

While cooking isn't his specialty, he's quick to joke that he'd much rather fix your car instead. His sense of humor and warm personality remind us that every meal delivered is about more than food. It's about making sure our neighbors know someone cares.

For many ALICE seniors, rising costs can make it difficult to afford nutritious meals while remaining independent. A reliable meal and a friendly conversation can make all the difference, helping older adults stay healthy, connected, and living safely in their own homes.

Welcoming a Brighter Future

Megan and Jio were preparing to welcome their first child when they suddenly found themselves without a safe place to live. After being asked to leave, the young couple faced an uncertain future with no stable housing, no income, and a baby on the way.

Like many ALICE families, they weren't looking for a handout. They simply needed a helping hand while they worked toward stability.

Thanks to United Way Emerald Coast funding and community partners, the family found a safe place to stay. Jio quickly secured a job, advanced to a better position, and Megan gave birth to a healthy baby. Together, they were able to save money, plan for the future, and rebuild their lives.

Today, the family has moved into stable housing. Their story is a reminder that when ALICE families receive support during life's toughest moments, they can move beyond crisis and build a stronger future.

Building a Brighter Future

For the Osbourn family, providing for their family of five meant balancing work, parenting, and the rising cost of child care. Like many ALICE families, they were working hard, but so much of their income was going toward child care that it became difficult to get ahead.

Thanks to United Way Emerald Coast funding and community partners, the Osbourn family received child care assistance, giving them the stability they needed to keep moving forward.

"This has helped my family so much," Mrs. Osbourn shared. "With how expensive everything is nowadays, it often feels like we're working just to afford child care. Without support like this, many families, including mine, wouldn't be able to make it."

For ALICE families, affordable child care is more than a convenience. It provides the stability parents need to stay employed while giving children a safe, nurturing place to learn, grow, and thrive.
